My Approach to Life
I am fascinated by origins. I love hearing how a couple met, how something we use daily came to be created, or the meaning behind a song lyric. I love to know how things started, and how they came to be what they are today.
I also feel as our society advances year by year, seemingly little important pieces that maybe we thought we didn’t “need” anymore are getting lost, overlooked or completely forgotten.
So I ask questions! I’m curious. And it sets me down a path to find the origin story. Ultimately the true origin of the world is written in Genesis, where it briefly covers fascinating details of God’s original design. This, and the rest of the Bible has greatly informed how I view life.
Here are my foundations for my thought process:
God created the earth and everything in it.
While I love that holistic practices are showing up way more in today’s marketplace and culture, I notice that there are some blurred lines that I need to define here. My intention for seeking holistic remedies and a more natural way of living comes out of my desire to live closer to God’s original design. I do not worship the creation, but the Creator. My hope is not in the creation. It’s in the Creator.
If everyone’s doing it, I question it.
Did you ever hear the question, “If everybody was jumping off a cliff, would you do it too?” Seems like a silly question, but the point behind it is to encourage us to make a risk-analysis and decide what is right, and what is best. In the case of public school for instance, this is largely what is decided for most American kids by parents. It’s just what you “do” when your kids become school-age. I question that. I look at the greater impacts, stack our family values up to the “cultural norms,” and look at my kids’ individual needs, bents and personalities. For us, that decision looks different, and I’m good with that.
I take this approach to everything, from big life decisions to every day purchases, as you’ll see through the pages on this blog. I like being different, asking questions, and dare I say — a low-key rebel if it’s necessary. 😉
How can I do “this” better?
“This” might be… how do I do laundry in a way that doesn’t take over my whole house daily? How can I reduce my time in the kitchen cooking? How can I incorporate just whole organic foods into this recipe? How can I make this dinner staple gluten-free? How do I make my own simple-ingredient lotion? I’m asking these types of things all the time! I want to streamline the daily homemaking duties, provide the healthiest options, and give the best of my time, energy, creativity and everything to my family.
This entire blog is built on the answers to questions I have asked over the years.
I search the Bible and read commentaries. I type the longest sentences you’ve ever seen in the Google search bar. I read books written by grandmas and pastors’ wives to glean their wisdom and life hacks. I follow natural-minded practitioners and nurses. I screenshot and save ideas from those who organize people’s closets for a living. I’m researching and trying my own substitutions for allergen ingredients in my recipes. I love learning, applying what I learn to life, and being able to share it with others. I fail a lot, I try again and do my best to get it right if it’s possible. Thanks for being here! I hope that this blog can serve as a helpful, inspiring resource to you!
